Dave Loses his Head on Neil's Ride

On the morning of Neil Stanton's first go at leading a mountain bike ride, the rain was very wet and falling rapidly as I arrived at Clay Bank. I was sat in my car hoping I'd got the wrong car park, when I spotted a familiar red transit squeezing it's way through the entrance bollards. Soon after Peter, Neil arrived and we also had Andy trying one of our rides for the first time. Only one new face on this ride, we better put some more posters up.

As we headed down the hill on the road to Ingleby Greenhow the steering on my bike felt decidedly dodgy. By the time we turned off-road to go across Battersby Moor my bike decided it wasn't to keen on turning left, the headset bearings had obviously seen better days. A little further along, the steering locked up completely, luckily I was only doing about 3 mph at the time. After a little persuasion some steering was restored and I cautiously carried on till we reached Baysdale Farm. At this point, Neil was talking of fast downhills looming which is normally good news but not when you can't steer so unfortunately I had to call it a day. I headed back to my car along the road stopping for the occasional kick to the head tube.
