Easy Ride from Castle Bolton

We had a good turnout for the second beginners ride this season. Castle Bolton has certain attractions, nestling in the escarpment of the wide vista of Wensleydale.  And so at the most unusual time of 11.30am some 13 hardy souls set off along the Scar towards Askrigg.  Our worthy President, resplendent with true mountain bike gear supported by his fit ‘young’ wife, joined the other worthy ‘beginners’ to test our metal and enjoy the countryside. Our youngest participant, Martin, some 14 years of age steamed ahead as we ably worked our way along the Scar in fine warm weather. At first it was fairly easy going but the track soon turned to grass and made the going tougher.  The technical sections began with a few steep dips and fords to cross. As we made our way along the Oxclose ‘Road’ into the old Lead Mine area our president turned orator and we all went and had a look at an open vein of galena (lead ore) and discussed lead mining in detail.

Anxious to make sure we had a good lunch stop I led the way (probably the only time I was in the lead) to our lunch stop at Birkin Gill. We were still 13 at this stage, intact, dry and in full spirits. Fun began just after lunch as we attempted the beck. Young Martin led the way cycling right across with aplomb in one go.  A few of us followed and watched as drama unfolded on camera! First the odd foot went in the water and then two able-bodied persons took unceremonious falls into the shallow beck. We could hardly believe our eyes but if this picture gets scanned and printed you will surely believe your own!

After a short spell and dramatic descent into Askrigg, we took tea at a local teashop. In the warmth the lycra quickly dried on the poor wet souls and all but bruises were forgotten. We made a speedy return along the road to Carperby where we regrouped before the short ascent back to the scar, which defeated all our attempts to ride up. Luckily there were no real beginners to mention the level of the ride but Marion and Martin were satisfied at finishing.
