Staindrop

Liz, Dave, Helen and myself met at Staindrop on the 9th of January on a sunny but frosty morning for the first SOC cycle ride of the New Year (Century, Millennium). We set off towards Darlington before heading north through Hilton and Evenwood, crossing the River Gaunless at Ramshaw before the climb to Woodland started.

The B road to Woodland was very slippy where it was still in the shade, but the sunlight lit up the view across Weardale superbly. Then as we crossed the ridge at the top it was the turn of Teesdale and the Vale of York to bask as we headed west towards Egglestone and Folly Top.

Once we had started the descent towards the café at Barnard Castle, the NW wind was now helping us instead of hindering us as it had.

We arrived at the Teesdale café to find that it had suffered an invasion of cyclists; the guy behind the counter reckoned on at least a hundred - must be all those New Year resolutions!

After we had refuelled, we headed back to Staindrop via Whorlton and Little Newsham, where we parted company.

Many thanks to Dave, Helen and Liz for their company.
