John's Ride to Staindrop

After an hours cycling we arrived back at Barton but we refused to tarry awhile and admire the ancient charms (the village not us!) and continued on to Melsonby and the golden west. Stopping at Carol's for morning coffee seemed an excellent idea but we missed the turning and continued thro' Caldwell, regrouped at Winston and on to our lunch stop at Staindrop. This is a lovely little five star cafe where they spend the week baking mouth watering cakes ready for Saturday and Sunday opening. I had liver and bacon casserole with lots of nicely cooked vegetables, and sadly only had storage capacity for a flap jack but the rest of the party kept up the SOC tradition of good eating.

After lunch there was a following wind as we headed towards Darlington and we bowled along in splendid style. Liz and Roly were well ahead but came back to join us on a deserted little lane to Langton. Foot and Mouth precautions were still in operation but the farmer was rather short of disinfectant so we only washed our boots and wheels, and on past Headlam Hall to Piercebridge.

We took the left turn to Manfield and Cleasby where we took the right turn up a steep little hill to reduce the main road travel. Some misguided person thought the road was closed due to bridge repairs over the A66 but with a little shuffling of barriers and mountain bike manoeuvres we were soon across and on to Barton where yours truly said bye bye and thank you to John for an enjoyable ride, and the good news is he's repeating the ride in February so if you fancy some truly delicious cakes come and join us.

We cycle to Scorton so often we would know every inch of its dirty sidewalks, if it had any. We set off late and arrived first to be joined by Liz , John, Alan and Roland.
