Great Smeaton

Three tandems, two mountain bikes and five road cycles met at Great Smeaton. Weather was set fair for the day as we ambled along towards Appleton Wiske, the first ringing of a mobile phone left someone digging deep into their pannier to find the offensive thing (hope it was just a double glazing salesman), meanwhile the others upped the pace and sped into the distance, the mobile phone owner would be heavy breathing before answenng another call. Catching up with news from your friends meant we were soon in Hutton Rudby.

Cyclists never seem keen to do long circuits at this time of year, so we deviated from the intended route to head for a cafe stop. Plenty of choice in Stokeslev for the tea stops. some people risked a meal in the pub, and the others went for a safer bet in the cafe. Our cafe stops last longer at this time of year, and this was no exception. The service was excellent, and we even managed a few alterations to the menu to be able to fulfil some people's fancies (or was that fantasies). The members enjoying the pub stop were delayed because one of the meals was late arriving, at least that was their excuse for being in there a long time.

Leaving Stokesley, we headed off to Carlton, no one deviated towards Carlton Bank, and it's not that time of year yet. We passed Potto Hall and headed up towards the A19 at the Black Swan. Safely across the A19 it was onto East Rounton. The group split here three members going down towards Northallerton; the rest of the group retraced the route from Appleton Wiske back to Great Smeaton.
