Catterick and SwaledaleSix of us met at Catterick and after the usual chat set off for Hackforth and then on to Halfpenny, from where we made our way to Grinton. Here Lizzie ordered us to have five minutes in the sun and everyone took out their butties and bananas. Our first major climb brought us to Harkerside, a splendid road giving us good views of Swaledale. Lunch stop was supposed to be at Gunnerside but the road we were looking for did not exist so we found ourselves on our second major climb, on the road to Askrigg. I was thankful for low gears and felt for Charles who was on his high geared racer. A quick descent and left turn brought us into the hamlet of Newbiggin. Lunch was on everyone's mind so we pedalled hard to Castle Bolton where the boys chatted with a couple of Americans who had cycled from Italy while Lizzie and I went in search of food. Joined by the others we enjoyed our refreshments, and reluctantly forced ourselves back onto the road and onto our last climb, Scarth Nick and back to Catterick. Cyclist of the day goes to Charles who did an extra 1.5 miles to make his first 50 miles which were far from easy. Thanks for the company of Lizzie, Mick, Roly, Dave and Charles and for the brilliant ride. Liz Corner |
