Carlton Bank

'Moderate 40-50 miles' - was how the programme described this ride. I checked with John, the leader, "oh, we will be going from Smeaton to Stokesley and around about". Sounded OK for my first Club ride for a long time. So I was met by Liz and Paul and we headed for Great Smeaton where our leader was the only participant. Then reality dawned and the 'round about' was to include Carlton Bank - not what I had anticipated.

However, Paul must have remembered my previous attempts at climbing steep hills and negotiated on my behalf, to go the easy way up Carlton Bank - I didn't at this moment think there was an easy way.

We headed off through the Rountons, Hutton Rudby and Stokesley to Great Broughton. Here I requested a re-fuelling stop before we began the climb. I managed the ascent of Carlton Bank and was rewarded by a wonderful descent to Chop Gate before another small climb to the cafe at the top of Carlton Bank.

After a lunch stop a fast descent to Carlton and return through Faceby, Potto and the Rountons where we said good-bye to our leader and headed for Northallerton - a total of 45 miles or thereabouts. I thoroughly enjoyed the ride - thanks John for leading it.
