BromptonOne hour before I had to leave for the ride the wind was blowing and the rain coming down and I was beginning to feel a bit of a wimp. I was sure John would be feeling the same being as he never likes cycling in the rain, however on this occasion I was proved wrong, he was surprisingly positive when I spoke to him on the phone. Rumours had it that Alan Turner was thinking of going and Paul commented that Alan would go whatever the weather, as he was a farmer. Sure enough there were four of us but luckily the rain had stopped and we were all feeling a bit more positive except for deciding which route to take out of Brompton. John's route was eventually changed because of the strong winds and Paul led us through the housing estates to get us on to the Knayton road. We took the Brawith lane to North Kilvington and cycled down the side of the A19 on the path for a mile. The heavens opened and The Old Oak Tree seemed a good idea. We had a warm welcome and the boys had the odd beer, I only had coffee (just to prove that all cyclists aren't boozers) and this gave our clothes a chance to dry by the fire. We relaxed and enjoyed our chat in this cosy little pub. Eventually we tore ourselves away and cycled on to Thirsk to the pie shop. We returned by the normal route through Kirby Wiske where we found the road closed. This always adds a bit of a challenge to us as usually we manage to get through but never quite sure. In this case we were able to negotiate a bit of rough road and lots of mud. Thanks John for a very enjoyable ride. 25ish miles. Liz Corner |
