Eglin's Hole

Come out and eat delicious bilberry pie was the cry, you can have it with custard or ice-cream (there had to be a catch). Oh, and by the way, you will have to do some caving (knew it). So, after a long and happy one-year retirement I was caving once more. Andy was home from Spain and liked the sound of the pie, so along with John who, as a baker himself should have seen through such a flimsy excuse, and Paul and Alison we found ourselves doing a very mild change in How Stean Gorge car park to the amusement of several picnickers.

The cave began with a narrow but enjoyable squeeze, which opened out nicely and off we marched with vigour for a whole 10 metres to find our way blocked (much to the amusement of Paul).

It was at this point Alison recalled we might be going the wrong way, echoes of carry on caving? The rest of the cave was interesting though it did involve rather a lot of not quite stooping/not quite crawling that is very tiring.

There were some fantastic sharp fan shapes and at one point what looked like a fully laid out table, much rutting around lead to the discovery of passages warranting a second visit.

The slug race was won by Paul with Andy a close second and the Bilberry pie was all it was cracked up to be (though John was forced to work very hard for his portion, Alison is a cruel taskmaster and lethal when wearing a naked flame).

Many thanks to all concerned for bullying me out of the house once more and reawakening my interest. I'll be back (if I can ever find time to get my kit clean).
