Bull Pot of the WitchesI have been on three other trips in caves with the SOC before this one, so I am quite confident and I enjoyed myself immensely on this particular trip. It was quite bad weather (grey with rain) but the trip went ahead, all because of the two sweet people Paul and Alison who organised it for us. The name is intriguing but so was the cave. Being quite remote and part of the biggest tunnels (network) in Britain (I think), this was quite exciting. To start with we used a rope tied to a tree to get to the entrance, to save us from the huge drop which in this case was a huge round hole, deep with lots of green trees and foliage, very much like Alum Pot. We then crawled and squeezed past small passages to a long (downwards) shaft which we climbed down. Coming out of the 'chimney' at the bottom you are confronted by the sound of running water and a ghostly pale light when your torch was off. This I discovered was the entrance waterfall. After sliding on wet claymud past a large 'river' near the waterfall, we carried on down a tunnel. This involved climbing, scrambling and sliding from there on, past mini waterfalls and boulders and tight spaces. I also learnt some new definitions that day from Alison, her words for sliding etc. in different places. So now 'sluthering' past things (or down) is a new expression!! On the whole (and I could go on for ages describing this outing) it was brilliant, fun and a nice experience. I am very grateful to Paul and Alison for going on such an easy trip (their standards) just for us. It was great fun, thank you very much. Chloe Crofton |
