A Spring Day on the UreDuring the preceding week there had been quite a lot of rain locally and rivers were at a good level. Twelve of us met at Aysgarth Falls car park in bright warm sunshine and, the cars shuttled to Wensley Bridge, we set off to carry the boats to the put-in below the Lower Falls. It is a long way and we were all glad to get to the gully leading down to the river. Those who had put all their kit on in the car park were feeling decidedly warm by this time. The Lower Falls looked spectacular with plenty of water, blue skies and sunshine. Anyway off downstream through a rocky section to a 4ft drop. Most got down alright, but two got wet! People and boats reunited, we set off downstream. Several short Grade 2/3 sections gave plenty of opportunity for playing and getting wet, before Redmire Force was reached. This is a series of three drops which are hard to protect with safety cover. Much discussion about routes, decisions to carry round, and then off in small groups. River left for the top drop, try and line up with a wave marking the line for the second drop, then hard right for the last bit. All paddlers down safely and meet up with those carrying round, a bite of lunch and back on the water for the cruise down to Wensley. Off the water, change, pack cars, Leyburn for hot chocolate and plan next weekend. Good water, good weather, good hot chocolate good trip!! Pete Bridgstock |
